Canned anchovies are a popular food in many cultures around the world, prized for both their flavor and nutritional benefits. Next, we are going to learn about the properties of canned anchovies and some recipes in which you can include anchovies.

Benefits and properties of canned anchovies

Protein source: Anchovies contain high-quality proteins, essential for building and repairing tissues in the body. They are an ideal complement for diets where you seek to increase protein intake.

Omega-3 fatty acids: Anchovies are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for cardiovascular health. These fatty acids help reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood, reducing the risk of heart disease.

Minerals: Anchovies are a good source of several minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium and selenium. Calcium is vital for bone health, while iron helps in the formation of red blood cells. Selenium, on the other hand, has antioxidant properties.

Vitamins: This food contains vitamins such as niacin (B3), riboflavin (B2) and vitamin B12. These vitamins play a key role in energy metabolism and nervous system health.

Low in calories: Despite being nutritious, canned anchovies are relatively low in calories, which makes them suitable for those looking for a balanced diet without excess calories.

Conservation: The conservation process not only keeps anchovies fresh for longer, but also enhances their flavor. The brine or oil in which they are preserved often intensifies the umami (or savory) flavor of anchovies.

Skin Benefits: The omega-3 fatty acids present in anchovies are also beneficial for skin health as they can help keep skin hydrated and reduce signs of aging.

Natural prebiotics: Anchovies contain small amounts of fiber that can act as prebiotics, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestine.

Versatility in recipes: Beyond their nutritional properties, canned anchovies are the perfect complement for all types of recipes.
